Loving Spain? Bar raises its retail game

A Tetbury tapas venue is looking to expand with a new restaurant, bigger kitchen and a dining option under the stars.

Having opened in 2020, Spanish bistro Lola and Co, at 20a Long Street, is now looking to increase business to meet demand for the popular venue which currently offers a ground-level bar with dining and an external rear terrace.
If Cotswold planners approve, the business will add a new upstairs restaurant area, with 28 more covers and a private dining area for ten guests. It will also relocate its commercial kitchen operation while modifying the second floor of the Grade II-listed building to create a one-bedroom flat.
The fresh bid before planners, made through Malmesbury architects Clark and Maslin, follows on from less extensive recent plans granted in March, the owners having now expanded the scope of the bid with the new availability of space upstairs.
Clark and Maslin told planners: "The business is proving very successful, however the current kitchen on the ground floor is very small and our client has the opportunity of acquiring the use of the first and second floors. Therefore, it is proposed to remove the kitchen from its current position on the ground floor, which will then just become available storage space, to the first floor, remove the residential kitchen and put in a light commercial kitchen that will serve the restaurant."
A doorway that is currently closed off would be reopened to facilitate the plan.
The bid also includes creating a cloakroom and additional dining at first-floor level, with steps down from the roof terrace to the existing garden, as well as "using the current roof terrace for additional dining space."
The busy spot on Tetbury's shopping area has seen a variety of past uses, changing from a hairdressers in 2017 to the premises contained two businesses, Cwtch décor and Bonhams. Subsequently they were occupied by Italian Kitchens.
Punchline has contacted the owners for comment.
