Teenager jailed for three years for possession of 'zombie knife'

An 18 year old man caught peddling hard drugs in Gloucester was armed with a horrific looking 'zombie knife', a city judge heard on Friday, 19 November.

Cameron Mitchell, of Frampton Corner, Seymour Road, was sentenced to three years in a young offenders institution after he pleaded guilty at Gloucester crown court to possession of crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply on 17th October this year.

Mitchell also admitted being in possession of the knife and criminal property - £498.10 in cash.

Prosecutor Janine Wood said that police officer's attention was drawn to a taxi with a young man sat in the back on Bloomfield Road at just after midday on 17th October.

The officers believed that the young man was trying to avoid being seen and when they stopped the vehicle the man quickly took off his seatbelt and tried to run away.

However, officers quickly caught him and found a total of £460 worth of heroin and crack cocaine, either on him or in the cab.

He was also in possession of two mobile phones, Mrs Wood said.

Most concerning of all, when he was searched the 'zombie' knife was found in a bum bag Mitchell was wearing, she added.

The blades of the vicious weapon were folded out, and Mrs Wood suggested the only reason he had it was to protect his stash of hard drugs.

A search of Mitchell's home address found no further drugs, but officers did find the packaging materials he had used to 'wrap' his drugs, including a black bag with holes cut into them that matched the material some of his drugs were packaged in, the prosecutor said.

She confirmed that Mitchell had no previous convictions recorded against him.

Defence lawyer, Joe Maloney, asked Judge Ian Lawrie QC to be 'merciful' to his client.

He said that it was a tragedy Mitchell was before the court for such serious offences, having no criminal record before now.

The lawyer said he recognised that damage that drugs do, but also that his own client's life was facing ruin for getting involved in such serious crime for his first offence.

The judge noted the extreme nature of the knife that Mitchell was carrying and how both knife and hard drug crime were prevalent in the city.

He said balancing that against the guilty plea and the lack of previous convictions, he could reduce the custodial sentence, but it was still too serious to be suspended.

The cash was seized, and the knife and drugs were to be destroyed, ordered the judge as he imposed the 30 month sentence of detention on Mitchell.
