VIDEO: Takings 25 per cent up at city centre business

More than three decades after arriving in Gloucester to start a career in catering Brian Trott has fulfilled his dream.

It has been a long-time coming for the entrepreneur who took over the city centre café The March Hare with his wife Marion earlier this year.

It has proved good move for the couple, and takings at The Oxebode tea rooms and confectioners are already 25 per cent up on target.

"I first came to Gloucester 35 years ago to study hotel catering and management. What I discovered was it was not a career I wanted to go into.

"After 30-odd years doing all sorts of things - running a football coaching business, management training and selling cars since then - the urge to go back into catering came back to me," said Mr Trott, who admitted a big motivation was the chance to spend more time with his wife, albeit while working.

Using all the skills he has gleaned from his other many and varied roles - the couple have also managed to use the power of social media and good old-fashioned bill boards and promotions to grow the business's customer base.

Regulars will know when they take a glance down the Oxebode and see a giant papier-mâché pink pig outside the café there is an offer on worth popping in to take advantage of.

Face book customers have left reviews including this one one: "WOW. amazing cream tea. all fresh and tasting delicious. staff were super friendly and prompt with food. would Def recommend and will be coming back for more!"

Mr Trott was interview by Punchline editor Mark Owen. A recording of the interview is below in which he also gives some advice to budding entrepreneurs.
