Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Cheltenham set to raise over £100,000

Cheltenham was aglow on October 19 as hundreds of residents gathered for Sue Ryder's annual walk under the stars.
The event, dedicated to celebrating the memory of loved ones, saw the community come together in a dazzling display of support for the national healthcare charity.
Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Cheltenham, sponsored by Capita and supported by Creed Foodservice, in2print, saw more than 1,000 people take on the 10k hike, with many lighting up the night in their brightest outfits, neon face paints, and glow-in-the-dark accessories.
The special event kicked off at Ashley Manor Preparatory School, where participants enjoyed a fun warm-up from Cath's Classes and music from i-Sing. The Exmouth and The Royal pubs both continued their support by providing snacks, dog treats, hot soup and pizza slices for walkers as they made their way to the finish line.
Participants also had the opportunity to pass through the softly lit tranquil grounds of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, warmly welcomed on arrival by the Tapestry Choir, and place poignant dedication in honour of someone special.
Crossing the finish line, walkers were presented with well-deserved medals, this year made from sustainably sourced wood, to celebrate their efforts and contributions.
This year's Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Cheltenham is expected to raise over £100,000 enabling the charity to continue offering this expert and compassionate care, ensuring that everyone has access to support at the end of their life or following a bereavement.
In addition, in a wonderful show of community spirit, attendees donated 30 bags of pre-loved items at the new donation stations set up at the event. These items will be sold in Sue Ryder shops to further support the charity's vital services.
Capita spokesperson Jo Wynn, who attended on the night, said: "We've worked with Sue Ryder for seven years now as event sponsor, and it's amazing to see how the Starlight Hike has grown in that time and the difference it's made to the individuals and families whose lives are touched by the hospice.
"The atmosphere at this year's event was magical, really joyous. It was great to see several teams of Capita walkers taking part and we were delighted to announce that we'll be sponsoring Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Cheltenham again in 2025."
Matt Reay, community fundraising manager at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, said: "Thank you so much to everyone who took part in this year's Starlight Hike. It was truly amazing to see the crowds shining bright in dazzling outfits and spectacular accessories, celebrating the memory of their loved ones while helping to raise funds so that Sue Ryder can continue to be there when it matters most.
"We are also extremely grateful to our dedicated team of volunteers and to everyone who helped entertain the walkers in such an energetic and fun way. Without your support, we wouldn't be able to put on this fantastic event each year.
"Another special mention to our long-term event sponsors Capita who have been an incredible support since 2017 and helping us to reach the magical 1,000 walkers this year. Everyone who has taken part has helped us to ensure no one has to die or grieve alone."
Last year, Sue Ryder's hospice teams provided care to over 8,700 people, including those at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham and within their own homes. Alongside their expert and compassionate palliative care services, Sue Ryder offers support to people living with grief at a time when they need it most.
Next year's Starlight Hike will take place on October 18, 2025. To find out about other ways you can support Sue Ryder visit sueryder.org/fundraise or contact the Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice fundraising team via email Leckhampton.events@sueryder.org or by calling 01242 395450.
