Storm Bert: GWR still awash with cancellations
By Simon Hacker | 26th November 2024
New updates on the impact of Storm Bert have been issued by rail operator GWR.
The adverse weather pattern, which began on November 21, has accounted for four fatalities in the UK while leaving many regions reeling from floods, with several rivers in spate and flooding across Gloucestershire.
The update seeks to offer insight and reassurance as teams from both GWR and Network Rail work long hours to clear and inspect lines, opening them for service where possible.
All services from Stroud (and Kemble) to Swindon appear unaffected today, but services to London from Gloucestershire remain broadly at half capacity, while further cancellations continue between key routes such as Cheltenham Spa and Exeter.
Meanwhile, among services into Wales from Gloucester today, two are indicated as being cancelled.
A GWR spokesperson said a limited service on most of our routes, including from South Wales, Bristol and the Cotswolds to London has now resumed, but added that the South Wales services remains confined to operation via a diversionary route, due to flooding between Bristol Parkway and Swindon. All journey times are being advised as taking longer.
They added: "Flooding is still blocking the line between Bedwyn and Taunton, meaning there are no long-distance services between Devon and Cornwall and London. Customers are advised not to travel on this route; we do have ticket acceptance on SWR from Exeter St Davids to London Waterloo for customers who do need to travel."
Local services in Devon and Cornwall are now operating with the exception of the Barnstaple and Okehampton lines, which remain closed. Additionally, GWR's Night Riviera sleeper service was out of operation yesterday and will not be running tonight, November 26.
GWR stated that a reduced service on long-distance routes will also exist today, and that further rain is forecast which "could result in further flooding of the railway at certain key locations".
Customers are being advised to complete journeys today by 5.00pm.
Tickets which could not be used dated for yesterday, are able to be used today and tomorrow (November 27), or customers are able to claim a full fee-free refund.
