Stay away older drinkers give Wetherspoons a headache

Older customers are still staying away from the pub which has hit sales at the Wetherspoons chain with several pubs across Gloucestershire.

Bar sales are down 9.6 percent and food sales down by 8.1 percent.

One key indicator of a generational factor is that cocktail sales are buoyant, while the more traditional pint has slumped.

In the 15 weeks to November 7, popular cocktails were up 45 per cent on last year as young people ventured out in larger numbers, but draught ales were down 30 percent.

Food sales also appear to have been affected by customers still working from home, with breakfasts down by 22 percent and coffee down by 30 percent.

Tim Martin, Wetherspoon chairman, said: "As outlined in our annual report, published in October 2021, there have been no outbreaks of Covid-19, as defined by the health authorities, among customers in Wetherspoon pubs.

"However, some customers have been understandably cautious. Improvement in trade will therefore depend, to some extent, on the outlook for the Covid-19 virus."
