Speculation on Truss's future 'not helpful'

After a week of political drama, Gloucester's MP Richard Graham is refusing to be drawn on whether Liz Truss should step down as Prime Minister.

Speaking to the BBC yesterday afternoon, before the resignation of Home Secretary Suella Braverman, Mr Graham said: "I don't think it's the most helpful thing to speculate on how long the Prime Minister will or won't be PM.

"I'm much more focused on what are the policies we are taking forward to deal with some of these huge challenges and how that will help all of our constituents in really difficult times - cost of living, inflation, mortgages - those for me are the key things."

Asked about the ditching of a number of Liz Truss's headline policies by new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Mr Graham said: "I think she would say that actually not all the policies have been ditched. If we look at the growth plan there are quite a lot of things in there like the investment zones, the speeded-up infrastructure projects and more home building. These are good things which I support and most of my colleagues do and they remain very much intact.

"Some of the other changes which a lot of us were, in a sense, voting for in the leadership election and wanted to see a slower approach to tax cuts in order to deal with inflation first and therefore I welcome the changes that Jermy Hunt has announced which he and the Prime Minister had agreed on."

Meanwhile, Stroud MP Siobhan Baillie posted an intriguing tweet this morning following last night's controversial vote on fracking, when ministers denied claims physical force had been used to persuade colleagues to vote with the government, who won the vote by a majority of 96.

Ms Baillie tweeted: "Environmental issues are hugely important to my constituents. I abstained on the vote last night, knowing the potential consequences. For those asking whether I am still a Conservative MP - I don't know but I hope so."
