Shadow chancellor heading to Stroud to sell Labour vision

While the country obsesses over who will be the next occupant of 10 Downing Street, the man who one day hopes to be living in number 11 is coming to Gloucestershire.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell is currently touring the UK to talk about the Labour party's economic plan and he is coming to the one spot of Gloucestershire that is still red.

Mr McDonnell, who was appointed as shadow chancellor when Jeremy Corbyn took charge of the Labour party in 2015 will be at Stroud Subscription rooms on Saturday.

According to the Labour party website, the event called 'Transforming Stroud with John McDonnell' will set out Labour's economic plan under the banner #TransformYourTown.

The event invitation said: Join us to talk about the economy in Stroud and how we can change it together.

"John will tell us about Labour's plans - then he'll hand the floor to us: how can Labour's policies help Stroud?

"What changes do we want to see? How do we work together to achieve them?

"What can we do to create a fair, sustainable and dynamic economy in Stroud?

"The event is open to all so you'll be with people from across Stroud and the surrounding areas - from local businesses to community groups and students. Together we have the power to get Stroud back on track."

Stroud is currently the only parliamentary constituency in Gloucestershire that isn't held by the Conservative party.

Long-standing MP David Drew, who first won the seat in 1997, won it back from the Conservatives in 2017 after Neil Charmichael won both the 2010 and 2015 elections.

The event will run from 10am until 2pm on Saturday, June 29.
