Self-serve coffee for Pret?

Coffee and sandwich giant Pret A Manger is thought to be planning to launch automated self-service coffee machines.

The chain, which has a store in Cheltenham, has been hit by severe staff shortages and dwindling commuter footfall.

Pret is understood to have trademarked Pret Express with the UK's Intellectual Property Office under "coffee vending machines and dispensing machines", as reported by Charged Retail.

While Pret hasn't confirmed the move, it looks like its latest effort to defy continuing challenges to the sector.

Last week, the company was forced to close 17 stores, as a high proportion of staff were hit by the 'pingdemic' self-isolation crisis.

Pret also relies heavily on workplace custom and has seen a fall in footfall as a result of increased working from home, leading to the permanent closure of 74 UK stores.
