Satisfactory isn't good enough when it comes to Gloucestershire roads

Overall satisfaction in the state of Gloucestershire's highways has doubled in two years - but that's not as good news as you might imagine.

A positive response to the satisfaction survey send out by the county highways department to all parish and town councils and elected members rose from 16 per cent in 2015, to 34 per cent this year.

All the surveys have shown a significant improvement in customer satisfaction compared to previous results, with 34 per cent saying that the overall performance of Amey in their area was good or very good.

But this is still a long way short of top marks.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways, admitted there was still a long way to go.

"Satisfaction levels are up since 2015, but there's more to do to get the county's roads up to the standard we want them at."

The feedback from the survey also showed that satisfaction in the quality of work has increased by 7.5 per cent.

The highways department's highly popular lengthsman scheme has also been praised by both parish councils and members alike, with the vast majority showing the quality of their work was 'good' or 'very good'.

Lengthsman is a two-person mobile highways crew that carries out a range of basic highways activities along a defined length of road.

Feedback from the surveys helps the council to improve services as well as target areas for work to be carried out. It also forms part of the key performance indicators that the council's maintenance contract is measured against.

Cllr Smith added: "I'd like to thank all of the local members and parish councils for responding to this survey, it makes a real difference to how we plan improvement works.

"We made a £150m pledge to invest in Gloucestershire's roads back in May and the responses to these surveys will help to identify the areas we need to improve.

To make sure the feedback reflects a similar time frame next year, the next survey will be carried out in late autumn 2017.
