Sales up at discount book retailer

Discount book and stationery retailer, The Works, saw a small rise in sales for the first half of the financial year.

The retailer, which has stores in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Stroud, saw overall sales rise by 2.1 per cent, with store like-for-likes up by 3.5 per cent in the six months to October 30, as reported by Retail Gazette.

This was despite a cyber security incident earlier in the year, which hit sales in May both online and in-store.

Online sales fell by 16.9 per cent, which The Works said was due to people returning to the shops post-Covid, but this was still 50 per cent higher than pre-pandemic levels.

The retailer said it had a strong summer, followed by a record 'Back to School' season and saw Christmas shopping start earlier than usual.

The Works remains cautious about how the cost-of-living crisis will hit customer spending over Christmas and into next year, but it believes it will be able to support families to celebrate Christmas in a more affordable way.
