Sainsbury's planning new online marketplace

Sainsbury's is set to put pressure on department stores with its plans for a new online marketplace.

The big four supermarket is planning to sell high street fashion brands through its website, as reported by Retail Gazette.

Sainsbury's is currently pitching to brands about selling their products online and in 60 of its stores. It's thought the retailer has already contacted White Stuff, Jigsaw and Yours Clothing.

The initiative is being led by the head of Sainsbury's non-food business, former John Lewis managing director Paula Nickolds.

Sainsbury's is expected to be offering lower commission rates to brands than John Lewis, which charges at least 40%.
