Road safety team launches new speed camera locations

Gloucestershire Constabulary's Camera Enforcement Team have launched new enforcement locations after information was submitted by the public about road safety concerns.

Two new sites were launched along the southern end of Secunda Way and Castlemeads Avenue in Gloucester earlier this month after complaints were submitted about the speed limit being exceeded as well as concerns of poor driving and some minor collisions.

Speeding is regularly raised as a concern of residents across the County and from 2010 to 2020 over 950 injury collisions have occurred where excessive speed was a contributory factor with almost 400 people being killed or seriously injured.

The team, which falls under Road Safety, are tasked with showing a presence on the County's roads to remind drivers of their responsibility to drive appropriately and lawfully and to deal with those who fail to comply with the speed limits and other regulations.

Surveys of the traffic speeds were carried out and confirmed that the level of non-compliance is high.

In the first two weeks of this month 'Box Brownie camera' signs were installed, and checks found that 38 percent of vehicles travelling along the southern end of Secunda Way were driving at speeds which could lead to prosecution.

David Collicott, road safety campaigns manager from the criminal justice department said: "As drivers and riders we all have a responsibility for the safety of ourselves, our passengers and other road users irrespective of the vehicle we are using.

"We are reminding road users to pay attention to the speed limit signs and keep within the limit."
