Road closures this weekend as 10k strides into Gloucester
By Andrew Merrell | 4th July 2018
Nearly 900 runners will take to the streets of Gloucester this weekend for the Gloucester 10k - and travellers planning to hit the city centre on Sunday morning are being warned to beware.
A change to the route to accommodate on-going building work could catch out those coming into the city from the north from Westgate roundabout along Commercial Road to the Docks, Quays and Bristol Road area.
Each year the event has grown not in size - as numbers are limited - but in stature and this year city law firm Davies and Partners continues to drive the race, with main sponsors construction firm EG Carter helping make it all possible.
Beneficiaries of the money will continue to be Gloucestershire charities - and this year it will be Young Gloucestershire and the James Hopkins Trust.
Creed Foodservice has supplied the water and fruit for the runners, sports shop Gloucester Sports is also supporting and SK Heating and Cooling has helped provide the prizes.
Hucclecote Harriers and Kingsway Runners also get very special thanks for making the run possible.
"To assist with runner safety and enjoyment the whole of Southgate Street will be closed for the duration of the run along with Spa Road and the top of Commercial Road from Ladybellgate Street and including the top end of Parliament Street," said Nigel Tillott, race organiser and managing partner at Davies and Partners Solicitors.
"Pitt Street and part of Hare Lane will be closed temporarily at the start of the run which should be open from 9.30am. Llanthony Road will be closed from Southgate Street up to the entrance to Gloucestershire College and including Llanthony Bridge. "
Organisers are also underlining their advice to runners to stay hydrated with a forecast predicting temperatures significantly over 20 degrees.
"We will have two water stations, at four kilometres and eight kilometres with bottles available to runners," he added.
"The advice to runners will be to take a bottle, especially on the outward run and sip it as they run round.
"Runners should arrive well hydrated and consider whether they wish to carry a drink around with them.
"In addition to water stations some marshals will have extra water and cups if runners are particularly in need of some water. Bottled water will also be available at the end of the run."
All roads will be opened again as soon as possible post event - which is expected to be by 10.30am
