River Island latest to re-open online store

Fashion retailer, River Island, is the latest to re-open its online store, after bringing in new safety measures in its warehouse.

River Island has temporarily closed all stores, including those in Cheltenham and Gloucester, but said it has started despatching online orders again. It shut down its ecommerce operations and Milton Keynes distribution centre nearly a month ago.

This follows news yesterday that fashion retailers across the UK could have as much as £18 bn in unsold spring and summer stock in their warehouses.

On its website, the retailer said it needed to close to make some changes to its set-up, so its team could work safely in the current climate. It said it had been busy putting new systems and safety measures in place.

This includes deep cleaning of the entire site, two-metre distancing zones clearly marked out for all teams, upgraded personal protection equipment for workers, digital thermometers for checks at the site entrance and updated safety signage installed in all area.

The retailer is keen to stress that this isn't 'business as usual'. It said customers should expect some delay in delivery times, but that all new orders should be processed within 14 days.

Other retailers which have recently started trading online again include Next and Dunelm.
