Renishaw gets tough with latest innovation

Renishaw is known for the precision of its engineering tools but its latest product has been put through some tough testing to ensure it works in harsh environments.

The global metrology specialist, based near Wotton-under-Edge, has launched the FORTiS enclosed linear absolute series which is designed to operate in tough conditions such as machine tools.

Built on the company's Resolute encoder technology, the design provides high resistance to liquid and solid debris contaminants.

Principal mechanical engineer Ian Eldred said: "The new FORTiS enclosed absolute encoder range is the culmination of years of R&D effort at Renishaw.

"It delivers superior repeatability, reduced hysteresis and improved measurement performance due to an innovative non-contact mechanical design that doesn't require a mechanical guidance carriage.

"Five years of accelerated life testing, under the harshest conditions, has enabled Renishaw to develop and refine the new advanced DuraSeal lip seals."
