Record Christmas for outdoor retailer

You can't go wrong with socks and gloves at Christmas, and outdoor retailer Mountain Warehouse has proved it.

The company, which has stores in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Cirencester, Stroud, Lechlade and Stow-on-the-Wold, has reported a record Christmas, following a surge in sales of socks, fleeces and gloves.

In the 13 weeks to 6th January, the retailer which sells camping, hiking and outdoor clothing and equipment, saw sales jump almost 12 per cent to £84.7m, as reported by This is Money. It served over three million customers over the same period.

Mountain Warehouse also enjoyed a huge Black Friday, with total sales up 20 per cent and online sales passing £1m on a single day for the first time ever.

Last year the chain increased its sales by 22 per cent to £225.3m. It expects to make record full-year profits this year.

Mountain Warehouse currently has 340 stores and plans to reach 400 over the next 18 months, creating 600 jobs.
