Railway bridge appeal reaches target after 'astonishing' response

A £200,000 appeal to fund the repair of a damaged bridge on a heritage railway has reached its target less than a month after the appeal was launched.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Trust (GWRT) - the registered charity that supports the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway - launched the appeal to fund the repair of the water-damaged 'Bridge 8' over the railway between Toddington and Broadway early in November.

Ian Crowder, the GWSR's public relations officer, said: "I received a call from Glyn Cornish, chairman of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Trust, to say that the £200,000 appeal target for essential repairs to Bridge 8 that carries the B4632 over the line near Stanton, had been exceeded and that the appeal had been closed.

"This is an astonishing response to the appeal which was launched less than a month ago and everyone on the volunteer-run railway is deeply grateful for every single donation, whether £10 or £10,000 (as donations were between those extremes)."

Remedial work on the bridge will start as soon as the railway closes following the post-Christmas trains which are running between Broadway and Winchcombe, daily from 27 December-3rd January. The GWSR reopens for its 2022 season in March.

The trains are running to a special 'orange timetable' in a 'top and tail' fashion with a steam locomotive at one end and diesel at the other. This is because the line is currently severed immediately south of Winchcombe station while essential repairs are carried out to a slip in the cutting. Please note that Cheltenham Racecourse station is, therefore, closed.
