Pure gold at the Everyman Theatre

The premiere of the classic Ealing Comedy, The Lavender Hill Mob, at Cheltenham's Everyman Theatre provided my wife and I with an evening of pure gold entertainment.

This funny, fast-paced comedy tells the story of Henry Holland, an unassuming bank clerk who dreams of stealing the van full of gold bullion he drives across London each day.

When Henry learns that his new lodger makes Eiffel Tower paperweights out of lead, he devises a plan to make his dream a reality. It's a golden opportunity to pull off the crime of the century, they'd have to be fools to mess it up ...

Comedy duo Miles Jupp, who plays Holland, and Justin Edwards reunite for this production based on the screenplay by T.E.B. Clarke.

What's really clever about this show is that there's only up to eight people on stage at a time but they play multiple parts.

It's a play within a play, starting off in Rio with the Ambassador and his wife at a New Year's Eve party when different elements of the heist are re-enacted.

There's some very clever moments and some prop changes, such as where a step ladder turns into the Eiffel Tower.

There was one part where Victoria Blunt, who played Audrey, did an impression of a French seagull which was just hilarious and would send the fear of God through Glostonians

Another part of the play is how well Holland knows London and there's a whole homage to the London streets.

A fantastic cast was assembled who took to the stage with gusto and it wasn't over-acted.

Although Miles Jupp is the main character and is excellent, he is backed up by a very strong cast. The way the cast portray four or five different people with different accents is extremely clever.

I haven't enjoyed a play like that for a long time. It was a really good show and a great evening out. What was also noticeable was how friendly all the staff are at the Everyman from the checking in staff to the door ladies to the people serving the drinks.

The Lavender Hill Mob runs at The Everyman until Saturday, October 22, Monday-Saturday 7.30pm, Thursday & Saturday 2pm.
