Protest against huge Gloucester housing development delayed - because of the Rugby World Cup Final

There is nothing more important to the people of Gloucester than rugby - even protesting against a huge new housing development on the outskirts of the city.

City MP Richard Graham has announced that the planned Saturday morning rally against the proposed Whaddon development has been pushed back to 2pm.

Originally planned to take place during the morning, England's march to the World Cup final in Japan has seen the protest - sensibly - changed to the afternoon.

The World Cup final between England and South Africa - which will involve former Sir Thomas Rich's School pupil Sam Underhill - kicks off at 9am GMT in Tokyo.

"This gives everyone time to roar on our team in Japan, and then join another outstanding good local cause," Mr Graham said.

"We've moved the time to 2pm so that everyone can watch the Rugby World Cup Final, and then come on to send a loud and clear message to Stroud District Council."

Mr Graham is encouraging residents of the city to join him in the field beside the Grange Road and Bybrook Road junction at what he calls a 'non-party political Gloucester gathering.'

The protest is against Taylor Wimpey's plans to build between two and three thousand new homes on the site.

The city MP has long campaigned against the development which falls on Stroud District Council land, due to fears over the transport infrastructure in the area being unable to cope.

Earlier this month, Mr Graham revealed an overwhelming negative response from residents to the development to a survey he had taken in the Grange and Tuffley council wards.

He said: "This development would be very difficult in many ways but above all create unsolvable traffic problems at St Barnabas roundabout - and this would affect residents way beyond Tuffley and Grange.

If Taylor Wimpey does apply for planning permission, Gloucester will be clear that we do not want to see this happen and that there are better places for development."

The rally is supported by all local councillors in Tuffley and Grange wards and community Facebook page Tuffley Matters.

Mr Graham has asked for anyone who wants to attend to park "sensitively in the side roads off Bybrook Road and meet over the stile, close to the oak tree."

The protest, which will be filmed overhead by drone, will start at 2pm.
