Prospectus published to mark the launch of the Western Gateway powerhouse

The prospectus that outlines the vision of the Western Gateway powerhouse has been published.

The Western Gateway, which has Gloucestershire at its eastern extremity is a cross-border economic partnership of local authorities, city regions, Local Enterprise Partnerships and Governments.

The original case for the Western Gateway partnership was put forward in a July 2019 report commissioned by the cities, Bristol, Cardiff and Newport.

The report presented strong evidence for a cross-border partnership that would supercharge infrastructure, investment, internationalisation and inclusive growth.

In the prospectus, chair of the Western Gateway Katherine Bennett CBE - a senior vice president for Airbus - said that the region has been a "powerhouse waiting to happen."

"With eight strong cities across the Gateway, alongside rural communities in the wider economic area, the Western Gateway already outperforms the UK average in terms of economic output, and is primed and ready to do so much more," she said.

"Working together across borders we offer a unique proposition to UK plc: to propel transformative, inclusive and greener growth as part of building a new future for the British economy.

"Whilst we are an economic high performer, we are also a region of contrasts, with significant pockets of deprivation, low skills and low pay in some of our cities and rural areas.

"Through harnessing the Western Gateway's innovation and geographical assets we can make a huge difference to people's lives.

"We can release the untapped potential of our cities, towns and villages, and provide real amplification and additionality to existing projects, infrastructure and industrial strategies.

"Delivering this vision will add more than £56bn to the UK economy by 2030, helping us lead the UK's transition to a net zero future."

According to the prospectus, "The Western Gateway goes one step further than 'regional'."

It covers the core cities of Bristol and Cardiff and stretches across South Wales and western England from Swindon to Swansea and from Weston-Super-Mare to Tewkesbury.

There are 4.4million people living in the region, who provide £107billion to the economy through 159,650 business and 2.1million jobs.

The stated ambition of the Western Gateway is "propelling a greener, fairer, stronger Britain... to unleash our full potential and blaze a trail for the UK's next generation economy."
