Police appeal after 'horrific' sexual assault in Cheltenham

Police are appealing for two people who they believed helped a teenage victim of a sexual assault in Cheltenham to come forward.

Gloucestershire Constabulary are also asking for anyone who was in the High Street in the early hours of Saturday morning to assist them with their enquiries.

Four men from Cheltenham were arrested on suspicion of rape in connection with the incident.

Two of the men, aged 21 and 38 have been released on police bail and are due to return to a police station on April 28.

The other two men, aged 22 and 23, have been released with no further action.

The assault happened between 4.30am and 6.30am in the lower High Street, but officers are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area from 3.30am to 6.30am.

Officers are particularly keen to hear from a man and woman who were outside of the Oriental Food Store at 6am on Saturday and helped the distressed woman.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Claire Nutland, from the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences team, said: "Enquiries have been ongoing into this horrific crime since it occurred on Saturday.

"I would like to urge the man and woman who helped the teenage victim to come forward as they may have vital information which could help us with our investigation.

"It's believed that they helped the girl near to Oriental Food Shop on the High Street at around 6am.

"If you helped the teenage victim or believe that you have any relevant information which will assist our investigation please let us know by calling 101 and quoting incident 63 of 30 March.

"Understandably members of the public have raised concerns about this incident.

"We can confirm that we do not believe this is linked to any other recent investigations into serious sexual assaults in Cheltenham."

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting incident 63 of March 30.
