Plans to replace Cotswold supermarket with retirement complex

A multi-million pound scheme to replace a Cotswold supermarket with a retirement complex has moved a step closer.

A formal planning application has been submitted to Cotswold District Council to redevelop the former Tesco's store in Farrell Close with 69 retirement apartments.

Applicant Churchill Living has put forward the proposals for the new four-storey complex.

The supermarket closed down in April last year, with a nearby Tesco Express store opening in Cricklade Street.

The scheme also includes communal facilities, car parking and landscaping, as well as the construction of three separate shop units in Farrell Close.

A Churchill Living spokesperson said: "After consulting with local people, we are pleased to have now submitted a formal planning application to Cotswold District Council for the regeneration of the vacant Tesco site in Cirencester.

"Our plans will create 69 new high quality apartments for the over 60s, as well as 239 square metres of new commercial space ideal for shops that will open onto Brewery Court, helping to revitalise this part of the town centre.

"By providing much needed housing for the over 60s, our plans will enable local people to move into the heart of town where they can continue to live independently, supporting local shops and services and actively contributing to the local community.

"Giving older people the option to downsize will also help to free up larger family homes in the area, and in turn help first time buyers onto the ladder."

An objection to the proposed development has come from Cirencester resident Nicholas Hughes who said: "I object to this building being changed to the planned retirement complex as I believe Cirencester needs to develop for the future of the youth rather than supply yet another retirement complex. Cirencester is missing the biggest thing - a cinema!

"This site could be used for a really great retail/cinema complex. Not only this, having this complex right near venues that trade later into the evening will also have a knock-on effect to the hospitality trade - given that pubs and venues are closing on a regular basis."

The application is set to come before Cotswold District Council planners in due course.

Churchill specialises in building retirement accommodation and has more than 170 developments nationwide, including a new site in Cheltenham.
