Plans revealed for 60 new homes

An outline application has been submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council to build 60 new homes on the site of a former primary school.

The plans would see a mixture of one-bedroom apartments and two, three and four-bed houses built on a now empty plot of land near Princess Elizabeth Way, Cheltenham.

It was once home to Monkscroft Community Primary School and 210 pupils aged between 4 and 11.

The school closed in 2008 and part of the site has since been redeveloped to create the Monkscroft Care Home - with the rest of the plot has remaining empty.

Plans to transform the remaining 1.8-hectares have been submitted by Cheltenham-based chartered surveyors, Evans Jones, on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council.

"The land has been declared surplus by Gloucestershire County Council, who are seeking outline planning permission for the development of the site, in accordance with Cheltenham Borough Council's Emerging Local Plan," said a statement accompanying the application.

Forty per cent of the properties would be affordable housing, 'in accordance with policies adopted within the Joint Core Strategy'.

Close to Gloucestershire College's Cheltenham Campus and GCHQ, the county council believes new residents would help to support the local economy through their use of nearby businesses and services.

Evans Jones also carried out a community involvement exercise on June 26, 2018, to view and comment on the proposed plans to re-develop the site.

Thirty-six people attended the open evening, with several key issues being raised by residents.

These included some not agreeing that the site was suitable for 60 dwellings, in particular that there would not enough spaces for car parking.

Concerns were also raised over the existing level of congestion on Shelley Road, and how this would be affected by the development, as well as the impact on nearby services.

No details of the final designs were submitted.
