Plans for new secondary school for Kingsway

Plans for a new secondary school for Kingsway are well underway and set to be submitted to the Department for Education later in the autumn.

SGS Academy Trust is proposing that a new 11-16 school is built south of Gloucester under the government's 'Free School' programme.

The new school will initially have three forms of entry. Each form would equate to 25-30 children. Over a four year timespan, this will grow to six forms of entry, with a maximum of 900 children after year four.

Opening in September 2022, the new school will support the growing communities around Hardwicke/ Quedgeley, as new housing developments are completed. It will cost in the region of £15-20m.

The new school will be completely different from a standard secondary school and will use the entire expertise of SGS Academy Trust and the SGS College to provide a full range of curriculum subjects, with a focus on digital and engineering technology, using the expertise of SGS's University Technical College.

Alongside the national curriculum, there will be a focus on technology and science, working closely with the SGS Berkeley Green University Technical College, local universities and major employers to bring the curriculum to life, so that it aligns with the working world into which young people will progress.

SGS Kingsway will also be autism friendly, with the school building and environment designed and operated to ensure pupils with autism are supported within a mainstream environment.

The school is holding an open consultation meeting for the local community on Thursday 3 October at 7.30pm at Hardwicke Village Hall, Green Lane, Hardwicke, GL2 4QA.
