Plan for Cheltenham country pub to boost trade

An extension is being planned for Cheltenham's historic country pub The Plough Inn to drum up more business.

Owner Punch wants permission to replace a timber pergola with a single storey summerhouse to create more indoor seating.

The pub, Grade II Listed Building in Mill Street dates back to the early 17th Century and already has one summerhouse in its one-acre garden which has a neighbouring stream, boules pitch and children's play area. It serves up traditional ciders and cask ales and an extensive food menu.

Punch said the new summerhouse would use the same footprint as the pergola and would feature glazed folding door side elevations and panelled gable end walls.

The plans also include new resin paths, external lighting and conversion of an existing store into an accessible WC.

The application said the extension will not affect the main pub building and will have minimal impact on views and neighbours.

A heritage statement said: "The areas for intended development will not detract from the beauty of the area, nor cause damage to the historic fabric of the building."

A planning statement said the aim of the extension was to attract more customers to the pub by providing a "desirable establishment and facilities for all."

The pub does not have any parking and Punch said it wants to encourage locals to walk there rather than driving further afield as it will improve road safety and discourage drink driving.

"Our client believes that a pub is an important part of any community, as it offers a place for people to socialise and relax in an alternative environment to their home," ssid the statement.

"The public house is very popular with the local community. Often the pub is one of the few places, which is inclusive to many areas of society.

"Punch would like to strengthen this into the area by offering improved facilities throughout and ensure the pub be more suited to safe socialising and dining for all."

Cheltenham Borough Council is due to decide the application by December 19.
