Parking charges could be scrapped in these Gloucestershire towns
26th October 2018
For those looking to lift what they see as the burden of parking charges from their town's businesses here is some potentially good news.
Earlier this year Punchline championed, both in its bi-monthly magazine and online, the battle fought to drop charges proposed for car parks in Nailsworth - as well as Dursley, Wotton-under-Edge and Stratford Park.
It was a successful campaign, and it is apparently off the back of that Stroud district councillors have now voted to explore the possibility of scrapping parking charges in Stonehouse and Painswick.
Councillor Doina Cornell, district council leader (Labour), has said there would also be "a strategic review of Stroud car parks", after traders from the town voiced concerns they were being left out.
It is news that comes at the end of a week in which Gloucester saw potentially one of the biggest uprisings among the business community in recent times when a new digital parking permit scheme threatened to restrict them to just four hours a day for each vehicle.
The sheer weight of opinion - which appeared unanimous - was backed by Punchline after it was approached by a long list of city-based traders and entrepreneurs asking us to fight their corner.
Fortune favoured the brave in this case and the council was applauded for "seeing common sense" and removing the four-hour limit from the changes - due to be introduced in early November.
