One year on from grim discovery of a body near the A419, has the mystery man been identified?

One year on from the grim discovery of a body near the A419 in Cirencester and an appeal to discover the man's identity, the police are still unable to identify the mystery man.

Gloucestershire Constabulary launched an appeal, called Operation Octave in early April after an initial theory that the man was a well-known homeless man proved to be incorrect.

The discovery was made by a forestry worker on May 1, 2018 and initial findings showed that the man had lain undiscovered for at least 12 months.

The public appeal led to more than 100 calls with possible leads and information but police remain keen to speak to anyone who they believe may be able to help the investigation.

Police have completed their initial investigations and all forensic and DNA examinations have taken place, but they are still unable to identify the man.

DCI Ocone said: "I'd encourage people to put together the image, circumstances of his discovery and the location where he was found to consider whether they have any information that could help to identify him.

"The process of working through information provided so far continues and I would like to remind everyone that this will be someone's son, brother or father and it's really important to the team to be able to reunite him with his family.

"I understand that it may be hard to think back to last year but if you know someone who matches this man's description that you haven't seen for some time please let us know by calling 101 and quoting Operation Octave."

The body was discovered clothed in a dark Peter Storm raincoat, a black gilet and blue trousers. Dark trainers and a beige baseball cap were found next to the body.

A small Sony wireless radio, aviator sunglasses a wind-up torch and Karrimor rucksack, covered ina white plastic bag were also found nearby.

Reports from a forensic anthropologist and orthodontist suggested that the man was around 28-31 years old, but it was difficult to accurately age him and he could be between 28 and 55.

Expert facial reconstruction services were used to create an image of what the authorities believe the man looked like in an effort to identify him.

Anyone with information that could lead to the identification of the man can be submitted by e-mailing OpOctave@gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk.
