Number of high street shops on the up

The number of high street stores has increased slightly, despite lockdowns over the last two years.

The number of high street shops increased by 1.3 per cent in 2021, according to analysis by law firm Nockolds, as reported by Retail Gazette.

Nockolds found that there are currently 257,250 retail stores in the UK, up from 254,010 in 2019/20.

The sector performed best in London, where the number of shops was up by four per cent from 39,940 to 41,545.

But while there was an overall increase in high street stores, the number of specialist clothing and footwear stores declined by 2.4 per cent from 29,010 to 28,310.

Unsurprisingly, the research also found that the number of online only retailers was up by 13.4 per cent over the same period - from 42,770 to 48,505.

Punchline said: "While this is very positive news for retail, with the Government's transitional 66 per cent relief rate set to expire on March 31, this spring could be crunch time for the high street."
