CEO's pay doubles to £1.2 million

Nuffield Health paid its chief executive over £1.2m last year - more than double the previous year.

The UK's largest health charity, which runs a private hospital in Cheltenham and a gym in Gloucester, paid Steve Gray £1.22 million in 2021, up from £570,000 in 2020.

Nuffield said the increase was due to him receiving a bonus for meeting rigorous targets, as reported by Civil Society.

The charity's overall income for 2021 was £995.6 million, up from £779.9 million in 2020. Income from its hospital services was £715.7m, up from £557.2m the year before.

Nuffield employs more than 16,4000 staff and said its salaries must be competitive for it to attract the right people. It said that large bonuses are standard practice across organisations of a similar size and complexity.
