New 'uncivic' category added to 2023 Cheltenham Civic Awards

Now open for nominations, Cheltenham Civic Society (CCS) has launched the 2023 Civic Awards which for the first time includes a category for buildings that are of particularly poor design or execution.

Andrew Booton, Civic Society chair said: "Our biennial Civic Awards celebrate the best architecture and design in Cheltenham's built environment. But unfortunately, we also see some shockingly bad designs that still manage to get built.

"So this year we plan to call out the worst of them. By doing so, we hope to persuade the offending developers, architects and planners to up their game in future - if only to avoid ending up with one of these 'uncivic' black marks on their track record."

There are six categories for the Civic Awards: restoration of a building or structure; a new building or structure; improvements to the built or landscape environment; a new or restored shopfront; a 'green' building; and now 'uncivic'.

Building and landscape projects must be located within the Borough of Cheltenham, be visible to the public and have been completed between 1 January 2021 and 30 June 2023. In certain cases, interiors will be considered. Nominations are free to enter and will remain open until 30 September 2023.

Andrew Booton added: "We hope that members of the public - as well as developers, owners, architects, engineers and planners - will nominate either their favourite new buildings or their least favourite ones this year."

Project entry and nomination forms can be found here.

The Awards will be judged in the autumn by a panel comprising CCS, Cheltenham Borough Council and local business organisations.
