No bang for your buck - lost revenue for city
3rd November 2017
The decision not to hold a fireworks display at Gloucester Docks this year will result in huge lost revenue for the city.
Organisers the Round Table took the difficult decision not to hold a display after problems last year. But local businessman David Purchase (pictured), who runs On Toast on the docks, says the city council should have stepped in.
He said: "Gloucester City Council seems oblivious to the fact Gloucester has lost thousands of pounds for its economy, with its bars and restaurants, the car parks and convenience stores, traditionally packed with visitors on the first Saturday night in November, losing out, whilst the money spectators spent during the firework event is spent outside of Gloucester.
"Council leaders cite safety issues as the reason to implement a firework display ban in the docks for the future. What I don't understand is why other authorities such as Liverpool, Cardiff and London overcome such problems and present great displays at their docks locations."
He believes the money the council spends on fireworks in the summer, should be diverted to bonfire night, in the interests of the economy.
"The tax payers' money spent on this event should be used to fill the gap in the diary on or near Guy Fawkes night to fund a display near to city traders, to help city business thrive and boosts the city's economy."
Punchline says: "With the loss of the fireworks at the docks, Cheltenham Racecourse had better get prepared for bigger crowds than ever. While it's great businesses for Cheltenham racecourse and the charities supported by the Round Table in the town, it a real loss to the city of Gloucester."
