Nile Rodgers and CHIC to headline Kingsholm

Grammy award-winning star Nile Rodgers and CHIC have been unveiled as the latest big name act to thrill crowds at Kingsholm.

Although the eagle-eyed among us would have been able to mark the Sunday, June 9 concert in the diary ahead of the big reveal.

A whole day before the announcement that Rodgers would be following Olly Murs in strutting his stuff on the Kingsholm turf the cat was let out of the bag –  but only if you eat your carrots.

The plan was for the news to hit the wires with all the appropriate fanfare on Friday morning, to give us a spring in our step ahead of the weekend.

Only nobody told the PR firm and the advertising agency that the Gloucester Citizen was a weekly paper that hits the streets on a Thursday.

So, while the ethical journalists held firm to any embargo, the eagle-eyed scanning the Citizen will have noticed a lovely colour advert giving the big news away, hardly chic!

Announcing – officially – that Rodgers would be headlining at the famous ground, Gloucester Rugby CEO Stephen Vaughan said: “Nile Rodgers is an absolute legend in the world of music.

“He has written, produced and performed on albums that have sold millions of copies worldwide.

“Kingsholm Stadium is a unique venue which provides a special setting and atmosphere for concerts and Nile Rodgers and Chic will put on a superb evening’s entertainment.”

Rodgers is a multiple Grammy winning composer, producer, arranger and guitarist who has topped the charts with hits like ‘Le Freak’ and ‘Good Times’.

He has collaborated with legends of music including David Bowie on ‘Let’s Dance’, Diana Ross on hits such as ‘Upside Down and I’m Coming out and on ‘Material Girl’ with Madonna.

That back catalogue means he has collaborated on in excess of 300 million album sales and 50 million single sales worldwide.

Simon Halden, MD and Co-Founder of promoters Music Plus Sport who are working alongside Gloucester Rugby to promote the concert is thrilled to be bringing the star to Kingsholm.

“Gloucestershire crowds have consistently delivered a great atmosphere for the shows we put on and we know 2019 will be no different,” he said. "Expect to hear some of the best-known pop anthems from the last four decades. With more than 200 production credits to his name, the scope of Nile Rodgers' peerless influence is undeniable.”

Tickets will be on sale to Gloucester Rugby Club and 1873 Club members from 8am on Tuesday, February 19 with general sale starting a day later at 8 am on Wednesday.
