New support group to help Gloucestershire businesses go green

Climate emergency, single-use plastic, reducing carbon dioxide emissions - there are plenty of environmental issues in the news and calls for everyone to do their bit to protect the planet.

The pressure is on companies and the business world to operate in a greener way and studies suggest over 70 per cent of consumers want to buy environmentally-friendlier products. But how do businesses embrace this green agenda, whilst still being financially viable, and can sustainability help them to future-proof themselves? A new group meeting for the first time on Wednesday 26th June may hold the answer for local companies.

Gloucestershire Green Circle is a new group offering businesses in the county practical advice, up-to-date information and support focusing upon sustainability and green growth. It's for companies that want:

  • advice about greener ways of operating
  • more customers for their greener products and services
  • to share their existing green good practise
  • to contribute to creating a greener and inclusive economy for the county

Co-organiser, Caroline Aistrop of Green Spark Marketing in Stroud, said: "We want to bring together businesses that want to be greener but don't know where to start, those already being sustainable, and those offering greener products and services so they can share advice, best practise, ideas and solutions. There are so many companies in the area already doing great green stuff that it seems daft to keep re-inventing the wheel."

The group will meet monthly and each meeting will look in-depth at a particular environmental issue with expert speakers, 'How to...' workshops plus networking, so companies have the opportunity to talk to each other and find new clients. In time, it's hoped that other benefits will emerge, like using group purchasing power to stimulate development of greener materials and services.

Co-organiser, Kath Child of Invivo, the natural pharmaceuticals company based in Stroud, said: "The emphasis is very much on support and helping companies to do what they can rather than criticising or finding fault. All companies are very welcome from sole traders, SMEs to large companies."

The inaugral event is on Wednesday 26th June 9-11.30am at Blackfriar's in Gloucester with 'Waste' as the theme. Whilst we should be reducing levels of waste produced, its re-use and the circular economy also offer business opportunities.

Dr Peter Maddox, director of national resources and waste organisation WRAP, will be outlining the Government's Resources and Waste Strategy, currently out for consultation, and its potential impact upon businesses. There'll also be a workshop guiding participants in how to identify and reduce the waste their business produces, plus time to meet and chat to other organisations interested in the green agenda.

Future monthly meetings will examine how companies can tackle the key environmental issues facing society today, fulfilling their CSR commitments and exploring ways to combine these with business opportunities.
