New road safety measures are set to be installed in a community in Tewkesbury following funding by Gloucestershire's road safety fund.

The Community Speedwatch Safety Fund, which is a partnership between Gloucestershire County Council and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC), aims to make the county's roads safer for the pedestrians, cyclists and motorists that use them.

Northway, in Tewkesbury, is the first community to have a Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) installed to help tackle speeding.

The sign will remind motorists of the speed limit if they are driving too quickly.

The £600,000 Community Speedwatch Safety Fund allows community groups to make applications for a range of measures. These include Road Safety Officer support, speed surveys, road safety-themed wheelie bin stickers, vehicle activated signs to encourage drivers to slow down, and community speedwatch cameras.

Applications for the second phase of funding will continue to be accepted until 31 January and must be supported by the local county councillor.

Cllr Dave Norman, cabinet member responsible for road safety policy at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "We want to make communities across Gloucestershire safer and this fund will help to do that by also helping to reduce the number of road deaths and injuries on our roads.

"I am delighted that we have been able to work with the OPCC to create this fund and that communities are already feeling the benefits from the first phase of funding.

"Groups across the county still have until 31 January to apply for tools that can help to make their areas safer."

Police and Crime Commissioner Chris Nelson said: "Offering communities the use of new technology will enhance their chances of changing the way some motorists drive and getting them to slow down.

"Speeding is one of the issues that people regularly raise with me. Which is why we are working with the county council to make the equipment more accessible and I hope more communities will apply before the deadline at the end of the month."
