New member appointed to Legal & Project Development Team
19th September 2016
Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal Trust (H&G CT) is pleased to have appointed Dr Caroline Buffery to join its Legal & Project Development Team.
In addition to her law degree, a Masters Degree in Commercial & Environmental Law, and having studied to be a Barrister, she has just completed a five-year PhD on the Legal Geography of the River Severn at the University of Birmingham.
The PhD, entitled 'Changing Landscapes', explored the theories of legal geography, a topic which integrates both disciplines and reconciles the issues of space, place, time and law within the physical landscape. Examining land use, habitats and the non-human environment, the thesis explored the law of the historic fisheries and navigation of the lower Severn to present a concept of 'sequent legal occupance' over time. The concept illustrates how law can leave physical impressions upon landscapes which endure over many centuries.
Dr Buffery is still undertaking independent post- doctoral research in legal geography. The three-day a week appointment within the L&PDT allows her to continue to practice law at a practical level alongside her continuing academic work. It also allows her to be involved in issues directly related to her thesis.
