New homes for older people in line for top award

Tanners Piece in Nailsworth has been shortlisted as a finalist for Best Older People's Housing Development by the Inside Housing Development Awards.

Tanners Piece was constructed in 2019 on the site of eight ageing prefabricated bungalows. Stroud District Council transformed it into 11 modern apartments for older people with Quattro Design Architects to provide high quality independent living.

The flats are modern, light and spacious; with wet rooms, a scooter store and a lift to provide a comfortable environment for older people wanting to live independently for longer.

This scheme was a part of Stroud District Council's £8 million investment in modernising and rebuilding sheltered housing to meet the needs of an ageing population.

Nationally it is estimated that there will be a significant increase in the number of older people over the next 20 years, so it is important councils are prepared and develop the appropriate infrastructure.

Mattie Ross, chair of Stroud District Council's housing committee, said: "I am thrilled that we have been shortlisted for this award as it really shows our hard work and commitment to providing affordable and accessible housing.

"It is very important for us to cater and adapt to the needs of an ageing population and I am glad that this has been recognised. One of our key priorities in our Corporate Delivery Plan is to be able to provide affordable, energy-efficient homes for our diverse and changing population; this was really brought to life through Tanners Piece and we are excited to pursue similar projects in the future."

The Inside Housing Development Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 4 November at InterContinental London.
