New council leaders elected

Councillor Rob Bird was elected as the new leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council at a meeting of full council last night.

Councillor Bird, who represents Cleeve West ward, joined Tewkesbury Borough Council in 2011 and has been deputy leader for the last 12 months.

Following the leader's election, Councillor Jim Mason was then elected as Deputy Leader. Councillor Mason has represented the Winchcombe ward since 1999 and has been the borough council's lead member for clean and green environment for many years.

Councillor Bird said: "'I'm extremely proud of the huge progress this council has made in delivering excellent services in the last 10 years, thanks to the foresight and leadership of my predecessors, Robert Vines and Dave Waters. My task now is to build on this success, to ensure we deliver on the ambitious plans already underway, to drive greater prosperity and quality of life for all in Tewkesbury Borough."

Councillor Mason said: "I am honoured to have been elected as deputy leader. I promise to fulfill the role to the best of my ability and I look forward to working with colleagues and partners to make Tewkesbury Borough an even better place to live, work and do business."
