New company to take charge of repairing Gloucestershire's potholes

Responsibility for who looks after Gloucestershire's roads - and who fills in those dreaded potholes - has changed.

Amey have been dropped from their contract with Gloucestershire County Council with responsibility over the £150million five-year contract passed to three separate companies.

The county council announced last year that it would not renew Amey's contract that expired on April 1 and began a tender process to seek new providers.

Ringway will now take charge of general maintenance work on the county's roads, including sorting potholes while the resurfacing contract has been won by Tarmac.

Major projects and professional services are now the responsibility of Atkins, with all three agreements starting from the beginning of April

Announcing the new arrangements, that came into force on April 1, the leader of Gloucestershire County Council, Mark Hawthorne said the changes will not affect services.

The council themselves will now be responsible for the customer services and frontline highway representatives as well as the design and supervision of resurfacing work.

Councillor Hawthorne said: "I want to reassure residents, businesses and all road users in Gloucestershire that we are working hard with our new delivery partners to make sure there is a smooth changeover behind the scenes.

"Potholes will still be filled, phones will still be answered, and we will still be working hard to keep the county's roads moving."

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Amey plc and their staff for being our partner for the last five years.

"Looking to the future, I would like to welcome our new highways service providers to Gloucestershire.

"We all look forward to working in partnership as one team, to continue to improve your highways."

Ringway already have responsibility for more than 50,000kilometres of the UK's road network, working for numerous local authorities up and down the country including Worcestershire County Council.

Nick Goddard, Ringway's regional director for the area, said: "I am personally delighted to be back in Gloucestershire.

"It is my home, as well as my 'office' which means that I can pay personal attention and be available to support our teams around the network.

"This new partnership with Gloucestershire County Council represents a new way of working; delivering local services for local people, by local people

"We intend to work very closely with other partners and the local community to make sure that we keep the highway safe and moving."

Atkins are a global engineering, design and project management company who have a massive portfolio of projects all over the world.

Robin Hodsdon, director for frameworks and commissions for Atkins, said, " Like Nick, I am personally excited to be back in Gloucestershire.

"I will be based in Gloucester leading a team providing transport planning, highway improvements, structures and drainage inspections and design, as well as the delivery of major projects to accommodate the future needs of Gloucestershire.

"We will be working closely with colleagues in the county council and Ringway to ensure first class delivery for the residents, businesses, and those who travel for leisure and business purposes, or simply through the county."

As part of the changes, the council have set up a new dedicated e-mail address highways@gloucestershire.gov.uk and a 'Report It' portal on their website.

The portal will be improved over the coming months and can be found at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/report-it
