New business units and homes planned for town centre

Details have been revealed for new business accommodation and homes on a gateway site in Coleford town centre.

The aim is regenerate the former Lawnstone house, bungalow and annex site and Forest of Dean District Council has launched a community consultation process.

The proposals will improve the overall look of a prominent area of the town's High Street and the 'gateway' to the historic clock tower with a mix of high quality housing and commercial units suitable for small business start-ups.

The council says it will also provide an attractive and versatile public open space for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.

A local design team headed by Sustain-by-Design have been commissioned by the council to produce a set of drawings (pictured) and residents and businesses have been invited to comment to help form the final design for a planning application which will be submitted to the Council in November.

If approved, construction is likely to start early next year.

The designs are available to view at the district council's main reception, Coleford, until Friday, 15 September. Alternatively comments can be emailed to LawnstoneSquare@fdean.gov.uk

Councillor Richard Leppington, cabinet member for development, asset management, planning policy, infrastructure and housing said: "Lawnstone Square is an exciting development that will regenerate an area of the town which has been begging for redevelopment for some time.

"This is an opportunity to provide new homes, business units and a public space right in the heart of the town. We encourage people to look at the design proposals and let us know what you think."

Mayor of Coleford, Councillor Nick Penny added: "Myself and members of Coleford Town Council have looked forward to seeing the full details of the Lawnstone Square scheme, which we hope will play a pivotal role in enhancing this entrance to the town centre."
