New app will make bus travel easier

A brand new mobile app has been launched to help residents who use bus services around the county.

GlosTalk is a free talking app designed and aimed at providing travel information for all bus users, particularly those passengers who are visually impaired.

The app was developed by Gloucestershire County Council and Trapeze. It links into the council's real time passenger information (RTPI) system, which went live in April 2016 to give bus users up to date travel details.

The council has worked with disability groups such as Gloucestershire Voices and Insight Gloucestershire to help shape the app.

One of the main features is a 'talk back' audio function which is designed to support people with visual impairments. This means users can ask the app for information out loud and it will respond.

The aim is to make bus travel much more accessible by providing a real time information which takes into account every stage of a passenger's journey.

GlosTalk is available in all app stores for Windows, Android and iPhone users to download and use now. It's a fully functioning test version and the app will continue to develop as the council receives feedback.

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure, said: "GlosTalk is a really exciting tool to help residents use the county's bus network.

"We know that public transport can be daunting to some people, which is we've developed it alongside residents that use the services. We hope it will help to encourage independence and allow them to get out and about without support.

"Why not download it today and have a look how the GlosTalk app can help you on your journey? We know it's not perfect yet, and we want your feedback too."
