New Aldi, Costa Coffee and offices planned on the edge of county town

Plans for a major new development including an Aldi food store, Costa Coffee restaurant and office blocks on the outskirts of Cheltenham have been revealed.

It will be built next to the new BMW dealership which opened last year just off the A40 Golden Valley bypass, if approved by Cheltenham planners.

The proposed scheme at the Reddings is a hybrid application following the rejection of an earlier plan last year. But not everyone is happy, as shown by some of the comments received from people living in the area.

The new application for land at North Road West and Grovefield Way is for 5,034 sq metres of office space (class B1), a 502 sq metre day nursery, 1,742 sq metre Aldi food store, 204 sq metre Costa Coffee retail unit and drive-thru with parking for 376 vehicles and 106 bicycles.

Outline planning permission is also being sought for 8,034 sq metres of office space in what would be a second phase of the scheme.

The developers of the 4.15 hectares of land are Hinton Properties (Grovefield Way) Ltd. The Aldi store and Costa Coffee would create around 60 jobs with several hundred in the nearby office accommodation.

But one objector to the plans commented: "Traffic system in the area is at breaking point due to volumes of vehicles. We already have 2 large supermarkets in the area and there are beverages available at both of these as well as KFC, Harvester and several local pubs.

"These plans would be better placed in an industrial or commercial area."

And another opponent of the scheme said: "The area could be put to better use providing car parking available to all local workers including GCHQ who will need them when the cyber hub is open."
