Names big and small sign up to Gloucestershire green business group

Climate emergency, single-use plastic, reducing carbon dioxide emissions - there are plenty of environmental issues in the news and calls for everyone to do their bit to protect the planet.

The pressure is on companies and the business world to operate in a greener way and studies suggest over 70 per cent of consumers want to buy environmentally-friendlier products.

But how do businesses embrace this green agenda, whilst still being financially viable, and can sustainability help them to future-proof themselves?

A new group - Gloucestershire Green Circle - is due to meet for the first time on Wednesday (June 26) may hold the answer for local companies.

Co-organiser, Caroline Aistrop of Green Spark Marketing in Stroud, said: "We already have some good companies coming - big and small, including the likes of Renishaw and Printwaste and we have had a lot of interest from others."

Dr Peter Maddox (pictured), director of national resources and waste organisation WRAP, will be outlining the Government's Resources and Waste Strategy, currently out for consultation, and its potential impact upon businesses.

She added: "We want to bring together businesses that want to be greener but don't know where to start, those already being sustainable, and those offering greener products and services so they can share advice, best practice, ideas and solutions. There are so many companies in the area already doing great green stuff that it seems daft to keep re-inventing the wheel."

The new group will aim is to offer businesses in the county practical advice, up-to-date information and support focusing upon sustainability and green growth.

This will range from greener ways of operating to acquiring more customers for their greener products and services, sharing their existing green good practise to contributing to creating a greener and inclusive economy for the county.

The group will meet monthly and each meeting will look in-depth at a particular environmental issue with expert speakers, 'How to...' workshops plus networking, so companies have the opportunity to talk to each other and find new clients.

Co-organiser, Kath Child of Invivo, the natural pharmaceuticals company based in Stroud, said: "The emphasis is very much on support and helping companies to do what they can rather than criticising or finding fault. All companies are very welcome from sole traders, SMEs to large companies."

Punchline-Gloucester.com is media sponsor for the event, due to take place on Wednesday from 9am to 11.30am at Blackfriar's in Gloucester.
