£2.2 million of contracts up for grabs

A decision on how to award contracts worth almost £2.2 million could be made tomorrow as Gloucestershire seeks to improve how it supports carers in the county.

Members of the council's cabinet will be asked to approve plans to tender to award a five-year contract, with the option of a further two years, to provide support to carers across the county.

Carers currently receive support through six contracts, covering assessment and support planning, emotional support, information, advice and guidance, training, carers' voice and short breaks.

Cllr Kathy Williams, cabinet member for adult social care delivery at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "Our county is full of wonderful carers who do such a fantastic job, selflessly providing support for friends and family.

"We asked both adult and young carers to tell us what they wanted to help them to provide the care they do, while also allowing them to lead a healthy and happy life.

"By making this commitment, we can make sure that they don't feel alone and that they are getting the best possible support as long as they need it."

The council held a number of engagement events with carers, as well as sending out a survey to find out what support they felt they needed and how it could be provided.

According to the council this feedback is now being used to shape a service that will provide support to both adult and young carers, through a range of personalised services, which will benefit the carers and the people they care for.

If the proposals are approved, council officers will work with the CCG to carry out a tender for the contracts which would be in place by April 2019.

The new contract will be broken down into two sections with £1.77m for adults and £0.390m for young carers each year.

An additional £30,000 will go to providing support to young adult carers who are still in education, apprenticeships or training.
