Morrisons saves half a million 'Magic Bags' of food from going to waste

Supermarket chain Morrisons' partnership with food waste organisation Too Good To Go has saved half a million Magic Bags of food from going to waste.

The milestone comes two and a half years after Morrisons became the first supermarket partner of Too Good To Go.

Instead of food being wasted as it hits its Best Before date, it is now packaged into Too Good To Go Magic Bags for UK shoppers to rescue from Morrisons stores across the UK.

Too Good To Go said the partnership has also saved 1,250 tonnes of CO2e. This is the equivalent to that emitted from 246 flights around the world.

The Too Good To Go app lets consumers buy surplus food and drink from retailers, restaurants, cafes, pubs and producers to stop it from going to waste.

Consumers simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for their local Morrisons store with unsold produce. They then purchase a 'Magic Bag' for £3.09, collect it at an allotted time.

The Morrisons Magic Bags contain a variety of surplus grocery items - such as fruit and veg, milk, cheese, bread and baked goods - worth at least £10 if sold at normal retail price.

Luke Wellock, corporate services manager - Sustainability, at Morrisons said: "Our farmers, growers and suppliers spend many hours making good food. And we don't want to see any of it go to waste - especially when it could be on someone's table and feeding a family. Too Good to Go's technology and their Magic Bags have helped us to find a home for food which could be wasted - whilst at the same time enabling more people to afford to eat well."

Paschalis Loucaides, managing director UK at Too Good To Go, added: "Since launching back in October 2019, our partnership with Morrisons has gone from strength to strength. Their commitment to fighting food waste has meant that they are the perfect partner for us and we're thrilled that together we are having such a great impact.

"Our app users love their Morrisons Magic Bags - not only are they preventing food waste but they're also getting delicious food at a great price. It really is a win-win-win".
