Minsterworth School to close
2nd October 2017
Minsterworth School is set to close at the end of the year.
Following a public consultation, Gloucestershire County Council has agreed to the board of governors' request to close it at the end of 2017.
The consultation followed a review by the school's governors which showed low numbers of pupils meant there wasn't enough funding for future years.
With a smaller budget each year due to the very low pupil numbers, the board of governors asked Gloucestershire County Council and Gloucestershire Diocese to consider closing Minsterworth C of E Primary. Following this consultation, the decision has now been taken to close the school on the grounds of it being financially unsustainable.
The county council published a statutory notice on 27th September, formally proposing the school closes on 31st December 2017.
The council's admissions team has worked with parents of children at the school to help them find places at schools in the area.
Cllr Richard Boyles, cabinet member for children and young people at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "The decision to close a school is not one that we take lightly. However, it is clear that this was the only option for the school due to its unsustainable financial situation.
"There has been no decision made about what will happen to the site as yet, but staff from the county council and the Diocese of Gloucester will be visiting the premises to make sure it is secure once it closes."
Punchline says we know that developers and entrepreneurs will be licking their lips at the chance to snap up this building in a prime location and turn it into something lucrative.
