Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is supporting a national campaign calling for white goods manufacturers to make their products safer.

London Fire Brigade's (LFB) 'Total Recalls' campaign wants manufacturers of the likes of fridge freezers and tumble dryers to introduce a number of changes relating to product recall notices, including:

• Sign up to a single product recall data base to make it easier for residents to know if their white goods are at risk;

• Notify the government of any recalled good or goods that have faults needing repair;

• Make sure that recall notices are better publicised to reduce confusion and get the message to as many people as possible.

Other improvements that the LFB is campaigning for include changing the way fridge freezers are manufactured, issuing international recalls through UK channels and making all appliances with models and serial numbers.

The National Fire Chief's Council (NFCC) has added its voice to the campaign as well as reissuing essential advice to people about white goods safety.

This followed the announcement that the Grenfell Tower fire started in a Hotpoint fridge freezer.

However, the campaign focuses on all white goods, not just the one brand.

In Gloucestershire GFRS has already issued advice on tumble dryers and joined the calls for residents to check their white goods online to make sure they aren't subject to a product recall.

Stewart Edgar, chief fire officer at Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and national lead for prevention at the NFCC, said: "What happened at Grenfell Tower was truly tragic and our thoughts go out to all of those affected.

"Locally we have been reassuring residents in the county by carrying out building inspections around Gloucestershire. What we want to do now is make sure this message is heard loud and clear across the country.

"By following this advice and checking your white goods on the government website, you can help to keep yourself and your loved ones safe."

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "It is really important that residents take not of this advice and check their appliances.

"Sadly fires in the home can and do happen, as we have seen with the horrific events at Grenfell Tower.

"However, by registering any large appliances you have, you can help to reduces the risk of a fire in the home."
