A man was arrested last week following an alleged assault on a worker carrying out resurfacing for Gloucestershire county council in Cheltenham town centre.

As part of the council's £150m investment in Gloucestershire's roads, North Street, Clarence Street, and Albion Street, Cheltenham are being resurfaced overnight this month.

Last week, on Thursday 20th August, workers resurfacing Clarence Street were subjected to verbal abuse, with the incident including an alleged assault on a worker.

The police attended and a male was arrested and detained for the alleged assault.

Cllr. Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways said: "I was appalled when I heard about this, it is totally unacceptable. These workers are away from their homes overnight carrying out vital work for our community in all weathers. They should be able to work safely without the fear of abuse and violence.

"This is not the first time we have had a nasty incident like this in Cheltenham town centre late at night and it will not be tolerated. We resurface roads overnight to minimise the disruption to road users and we would hate to reverse this decision.

"I hope there will be no repeat of this incident, as we take the safety of these workers extremely seriously. If we had to switch this type of scheme to daytime working we will all suffer with the likely increase in disruption."
