Major road closes overnight for essential work

One of Gloucestershire's busiest roads will close at night time to enable repair work to take place.

Gloucestershire County Council is resurfacing the A436 between the Air Balloon Roundabout and Oxford Cottages overnight between 22 and 31 October.

As part of the county council's £150 million investment in highways, crews will be working between 7pm and 7am weeknights to bring the surface back to life.

Crews will complete essential resurfacing along the 12,093 square metre stretch of road with 1524 tonnes of material. The road will be closed for overnight resurfacing between the Air Balloon roundabout and the Severn Springs roundabout.

During the day, Amey's drainage team will be installing a pipe in the area between 22 October and 9 November to improve road drainage during heavy rain. The pipe work will be done off peak during weekdays between 9.30am to 3.30pm under temporary traffic lights to minimise disruption.

The road will be open on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 however it is recommended that drivers plan their journeys through the area as there may be delays.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood, said, "I'm pleased this crucial route connecting the county to the Cotswolds and beyond is benefitting from our £150 million investment. We will be working overnight and off peak during the day to try to limit disruption, and I would like to ask residents to be patient - it will be worth it in the long run."

Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, local member for Bourton-on-the-Water and Northleach, said, "This stretch of road is very busy, and a lot of commuters and residents rely on it being in good condition. I have asked for this stretch to be resurfaced and I'm glad to see it finally getting some attention."

What's the diversion route?

From the A436 (eastern side of the closure extents) take the first exit at the first roundabout and at the 2nd roundabout continue straight over in the direction of the A435 Cheltenham town centre. Continue along the A435 to the High Street and follow the road around the corner onto the A46 Bath Road. Continue along the A46 in the direction of Stroud remaining on the A46 through Shurdington until you reach the A417 roundabout. At the roundabout take the first exit in direction to Birdlip. Follow the A417 to the Air balloon roundabout, then take the first exit onto the A436. Diversion is the same in reverse.
