Major fundraising day in memory of Emily

A fundraising campaign to make boating safer following the tragic death of Emily Gardner will be held this weekend.

Emily's parents Debbie and Clive Gardner will be hosting a 24 hour Relay Run and Family Fun Day at Wall's Club in Barnwood to raise money for Emily's Code on 8 and 9 July.

Emily's Code honours the memory of Gloucester schoolgirl Emily Gardner from Abbeymead, Gloucester who sadly died in a boating accident when she was 14 due to an ill-fitting buoyancy aid snagging on the cleat of a capsized speedboat.

Emily's Code highlights a number of factors that are essential for safe boating and which could have prevented Emily's accident.

The event aims to save lives at sea, raise awareness and funds to continue to promote Emily's Code across the UK, including schools, training centres and to the boating community.

This is the Gardner family's second event with almost 85 relay runners signed up to join in the 24 hour relay race covering 236km. The runners will cross key landmarks across Gloucester which held significance for Emily.

Debbie Gardner, Emily's mother, said: "Emily's Code is particularly important as the weather gets hotter and our kids go on summer holidays.

"Anyone going in a boat should stop and think of Emily's Code first, and this event will raise important funds so that we can spread this crucial message.

"No family should have to experience what we have, and something as simple as checking if your life jacket fits right can save your life."

The relay will end with a one mile fun run on Sunday at 12pm at Walls Club in Barnwood, the main sponsors of the event, for runners of all skills and ages before the family event begins.

There is no entry fee, and there will be live music, as well as food and refreshments on sale.
